People on cell phone

Cell Phone Usage Challenge

  • The typical cell phone user touches his or her phone 96 times every day. That’s once every 10 minutes.

  • Teenagers, on average, spend 7 hours and 22 minutes on their phones each day. Tweeners (8 to 12) spend 4 hours and 44 minutes each day. Adults average 3 to 4 hours a day.

Impact of too much cell phone usage:

  • Impacts short-term memory and problem solving.

  • Affects our sleep.

  • Feel more unhappy, depressed, and stressed.

  • Less productive.

  • Increases obesity.

The Grand View Student Wellness Action Team (SWAT) encourages teachers, parents, and students to try one or more of these challenges for the next seven days.

  • Turn off notifications
  • Limit time on social media or games.

  • Put the phone away an hour before bedtime.

  • Turn on the do not disturb feature before going to bed.

  • Charge your phone away from your bed.

  • Put the phone away while eating.

  • Put your phone away when you get home.
