Grand View Student Wellness Action Team

  • According to the CDC 43% of adults drink less than 4 cups of water a day.

  • 35% of adults drink 4 to 7 cups a day, while only 22% drink 8 cups or more.

How much water should I drink?

  • For men, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends a total of 13 cups (about 3 liters) of fluid each day.

  • For women, they suggest 9 cups (a little over 2 liters) of fluid each day.

  • In general, children and teens need about 6 to 8 cups of water a day. They should also eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies, which are full of water.

Water helps your body:

  • Keep a normal temperature

  • Lubricate and cushion joints

  • Protect your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues

  • Get rid of wastes through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements

  • Keeps you healthy

Tips to drink more water:

  • Carry a water bottle with you and refill it throughout the day.

  • Freeze some freezer safe water bottles. Take one with you for ice-cold water all day long.

  • Choose water over sugary drinks.

  • Opt for water when eating out. You’ll save money and reduce calories.

  • Serve water during meals.

  • Add a wedge of lime or lemon to your water. This can help improve the taste and help you drink more water than you usually do.
