THE BUZZ AT THE BEE

T HE CROWD IN the Tahlequah Public Schools Performing Arts Center fell silent when Hazel McLane, an eighth-grader from Grand View School, stepped to the microphone Tuesday during the Cherokee County Spelling Bee. Moments later, the room erupted with applause when Hazel sounded out the last letter in the word "follicle," capturing first place in this year's county bee.

GRAND VIEW - After letting 40 students try out last week, the Cherokee National Youth Choir has filled out its roster, and among those chosen is a student from Grand View School. Marcus Daugherty, a sixth-grader who is also on the basketball team, successfully auditioned for the Cherokee language choir.

Grand View School students recently competed in the annual Spelling Bee. Trace Russell placed first after competing in six rounds and spelling "tribulations" for the win. Hazel McLane competed fiercely for the runner-up position with the final word "teak."

Tahlequah Public Schools administrators and representatives have consistently supported, partnered, and-or sponsored educational, athletic and academic efforts that involve Grand View School students, staff and representatives. The Grand View School board members recently presented Matt Cloud, TPS athletic director, a plaque thanking TPS for its continued collaboration.

TRAMS adds more schools to donor list

Tahlequah Rock and Mineral Society has been donating $75 to all Cherokee County elementary schools so more earth science library materials may be purchased. Recent recipients include Briggs School, Tenkiller School, Keys Elementary School, Grand View School, and Hulbert Elementary School. TRAMS supports schools' STEM - science, technology, engineering, and mathmatics - education efforts.

Grand View School recently hosted a Native American Song and Food Festival wherein approximately 300 parents, students and community members were able to experience an evening of entertainment and cultural awareness. Choogie Kingfisher emceed this educational event, which allowed attendees the opportunity to hear the Cherokee language vocal talents from the Cherokee Adult Choir, Cherokee Nation Immersion School Choir, and the Grand View School Cherokee Choir.
